Ontario Public Health announced its highest daily figure for positive COVID-19 cases with 732 reported today.
There have now been 52,980 lab-confirmed cases in the province, of which 44,850 people have recovered, including 428 patients since yesterday's report.
There are currently 5,203 active cases in Ontario.
There have also been two more fatalities linked to the virus, bringing the death toll to 2,927. According to Ontario Public Health, there were 74 deaths reported for cases that occurred in the spring or summer that are now being recorded as part of a "data review and data cleaning initiative."
Ahead of today's numbers being released, Minister of Health Christine Elliott Tweeted that due to a data review at Toronto Public Health, "a number of cases and deaths that occurred in the spring or summer are being reported today."
Approximately two-thirds of all deaths in Ontario (1,909) have occurred in long-term care facilities.
Earlier this week, the province hit a high-water mark for new daily cases with 700 announced on Monday. That number fell to 554 on Tuesday, jumped again to 625 on Wednesday before dropping to 538 on Thursday.
Since yesterday's report, 40,093 new tests have been completed in the previous 24-hour period, bringing the provincial total to more than four million now. Of those, 90,513 remain under investigation.
There are 167 hospitalized with COVID-19, 38 of whom are in intenstive care. Twenty-one patients are on ventilators, which is an increase of four since yesterday.
The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units is:
- Algoma Public Health: 33 cases, rate of 28.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 33 cases. There are three known active cases.
- North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 38 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 40 cases. There are no known active cases.
- Porcupine Health Unit: 83, rate of 99.5 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 84 cases. There are four known active cases.
- Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 108 cases, rate of 54.3 per 100,000 population. There are six known active cases.
- Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.
- Northwestern Health Unit: 56 cases, rate of 63.9 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 65 cases and one probable case. There are 16 known active cases.
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 107 cases, rate of 71.4 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.
The Ontario rate of infection is 356.4.
