Ontario reports 790 new COVID cases today

Province also confirmed nine more deaths due to the coronavirus; there are 14 known active cases across Northern Ontario

The province's public health agency has confirmed 790 new cases of COVID-19, 719 recoveries, and nine deaths in today's epidemiological update. 

The nine deaths reported today include five people between 60 and 79 years old, one person between 40 and 59 years old, and three people over the age of 80. 

Based on today's report, another 44 people have been hospitalized with the coronavirus, including six people who have been admitted to intensive care units. 

Of the 790 new cases reported today, 56 per cent are individuals under the age of 40. 

The four provincial hotspots currently under stage two restrictions reported 77 per cent of the new cases included in today's report. Toronto Public Health reported 321 new cases, Peel reported 157 new cases, York reported 76 new cases, and Ottawa reported 57 new cases.

The province confirmed 144 new school-related cases today, including 66 student cases, 13 staff cases, and 65 unidentified cases. There have been 1,569 school-related cases since the beginning of September, and they are spread across 518 schools (10 per cent of the schools in Ontario). There are four schools currently closed because of COVID cases. 

There are 19 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in childcare settings, according to the province's report for Oct. 21. 

Based on information provided by the province, there are 6,299 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario, and 260 of those individuals are hospitalized. There are 71 COVID patients in intensive care units and 49 COVID patients on ventilators. 

Since last report, the province indicates public health labs have processed 32,646 COVID tests and there is a current backlog of 29,332 tests awaiting processing. 

To date, the province has confirmed 66,686 cases of COVID-19, and has reported 57,325 of those cases as resolved and 3,062 cases ending in death. 

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units, at the time of today’s provincial update, is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 40 cases, rate of 35 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 45 cases, rate of 34.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 46 cases. There are five known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 91, rate of 109.1 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 90 cases. There are four known active cases (one outside the region). 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 113 cases, rate of 56.3 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 17 cases. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 71 cases, rate of 78.7 per 100,000. There is one known active case.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 109 cases, rate of 72.7 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
