Bad news for Sault curlers itching to return to the ice.

Community First Curling Centre announced on its Facebook page this morning they have decided to "press pause" on return to play plans.

The club cites the provincial government's recent decision to reduce gathering limits province-wide in response to an uptick in COVID-19 cases.

The club says it will not be opening as usual following the Thanksgiving weekend (Oct. 10-12).

The post suggests the Return to Play Committee for Community First Curling Centre will re-evaluate a timeline "in a few weeks," with the hope that curling will resume at some point this fall.

The Return to Play Committee was first formed in August to plan a season and league schedules that included COVID-19 precautions.

A post on the curling club's Facebook page stated the following protocols will be in place once the season starts:

  • Leagues will be subdivided into divisions of six teams with 4-6 players who are members of the curling club
  • Players not registered to a team will not be permitted to spare
  • Physical distancing and mandatory masking
  • Increased sanitation
  • No spectators, handshaking, or scoreboards will be permitted

The curling club has been shuttered since late March when COVID-19 cases began to surge in Ontario. League play and all remaining events were cancelled.
