Breaking: Inmate tests positive for COVID-19 in Sault jail

Positive test result confirmed early Sunday, says union president
prison jail locked up

An inmate at the Algoma Teatment and Remand Centre has tested positive for COVID-19, SooToday has confirmed.

OPSEU Local 678 President Josh Miller says the test results were received early Sunday morning as part of an ongoing testing program for recently-admitted offenders.

"There are procedures in place to monitor and test newly-admitted offenders, and we limit movement of these offenders during a 14-day intake period for this very reason," Miller said in an email to SooToday Sunday.

Contact tracing will be completed with the assistance of Algoma Public Health.

Miller says the local joint occupational health and safety committee is investigating and taking steps to ensure the health and safety of union members at the jail.
