Algoma Public Health has given the green light for Sault Ste. Marie high schools to resume in-person learning starting Monday.

In a press release issued this afternoon, the health unit says "In review of recent epidemiologic trends, and in collaboration with Algoma school boards, in-person learning will be permitted to resume in Sault Ste. Marie high schools on Jan. 25, 2021. Instructions and recommendations issued to Algoma school boards on Jan. 8 are no longer in effect."

APH encourages students and parents to visit the website of their school and school board for more information on ongoing options for both in-person and virtual learning.

Today's news for the Sault-area comes as seven more Southern Ontario health units are approved to return to in-class learning.

The provincial government announced in late December that all schools would be closed and Ontario students would learn remotely for the opening week of the winter term.

After Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency on Jan. 12, the remote learning order was extended to Feb. 10 for five Southern Ontario COVID-19 hot spot regions.

Northern Ontario school districts were given the go-ahead from the province to re-open Jan. 11, but Algoma Public Health intervened, keeping high school students in the Sault home until "at least Jan. 25" and making in-school learning optional at the elementary level.
