Police find open liquor during 11:30 a.m. traffic stop

BLIND RIVER - On November 28, 2015, officers from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties on Highway 17, in the village of Iron Bridge, west of Blind River.

At 11:33 a.m., a vehicle travelling eastbound on Highway 17 was observed by police and a traffic stop was initiated. 

The male driver refused to co-operate with police and as a result of the investigation, police determined the driver had been consuming alcohol and that there was open liquor inside the vehicle.

Daniel BOILEAU, 69 years of age, from Thessalon, was arrested and charged with the following:

• Driving while disqualified, contrary to the Criminal Code.

• Refusing to provide breath sample, roadside screening device, contrary to the Criminal Code.

• Obstruct a peace officer, contrary to the Criminal Code.

• Driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

• Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor, contrary to the Liquor Licence Act.

• Driving a motor vehicle with no validation permit, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

• Driver fail to give identification, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, on February 4, 2016, to answer to his charges.

His Ontario driver’s licence was seized and his vehicle impounded for 45 days.

The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving.

Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
