A Stately home becomes a place to help many

The Royal Victoria Hospital was opened in 1917 in a three-storey home at 137 Albert St. and leased for $100 per year.  

In 1919 two of the children of W. H. & Maria Plummer offered to donate the family home "Lynnhurst" and grounds to the Algoma Benevolent Society on the condition that it be named in honour of their parents "Plummer Memorial Hospital".

In 1922 the new 33 bed hospital was ready at Lynnhurst and the Royal Victoria Hospital moved in. As the new hospital grew more property was required and the hospital board purchased the lot next to the Plummer home and the waterfront lot adjacent.

A campaign was launched to raise funds for a new hospital and the new building on the same site was completed in 1929.

Lynnhurst continued as the emergency dept. for a couple of years and when the hospital began training nurses on site Lynnhurst became the nurse's residence.
