The team at Northern Dental Care have compiled these tips to keep your teeth healthy this holiday season!

Try to limit how many carbonated beverages you consume. Pop is a strong acid and very damaging for your teeth, with a high sugar and acidity content it can break down the natural protective structure of the teeth. The sugar in pop can increase your chance of developing cavities, while the high acid levels can erode away outer hard natural tooth structure that protects soft inner portion of the tooth. To reduce sugar and acid exposure to your teeth use a straw to drink these beverages. If using a straw is not possible, rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking, especially before brushing your teeth. Water will naturally cleanse the sugar off the teeth and buffer the acidity levels in the oral cavity.

Limit your exposure to sticky sugar laden candy this holiday season. We know that sugar can increase risk of dental cavities, but hard or sticky candy can be exponentially more harmful to teeth.  Hard and sticky candy may damage teeth when chewed and can get stuck between teeth thus increasing your risk of cavities.  So if you are eating a lot of hard and sticky candy this holiday season, remember to floss daily and use a mouthwash with fluoride to help keep your tooth enamel strong!

If you are travelling this season, remember to pack your toothbrush and dental floss! With the hustle and bustle while travelling or visiting, brushing and flossing can fall by the wayside. It is important to brush a few times per day and floss atleast once. If you are able to chew sugarless gum during the day, it can help stimulate your saliva which is a natural cleanser for the teeth.

If you have a problem with your teeth over the holidays, ensure that you have your dentist's emergency number so you can be seen as soon as possible. Leaving a problem for a week or two may seem like no big deal, but the dental problem can be exacerbated by waiting. Time is of the essence!
