A Bit About . . . Katrina Thibodeau

This week, everyone's favourite interviewer, Mindy Furano, asks a local tattoo studio owner about the one body part she would be nervous to ink . . .

Mindy: Around Sault Ste. Marie you’re known for your work as an artist and owner of tattoo and art studio Discover The Canvas at 317 Wellington St. West. You’ve brought your training and expertise gained in Toronto back to the Sault, and recently partnered with Impression Co., selling their clothing exclusively in store!

It’s an exciting time for you professionally, but right now I’d like to get to know a little bit about you, Katrina Thibodeau - the person behind the tattoos. How does that sound?

Katrina: Hmm.

Mindy: No good?

Katrina: Know the person behind the artist...honestly? I’m kind of lame.

Mindy: Between “yes” and “no” - which feels most comfortable.

Katrina: I’m honestly a pretty open book already.

Mindy: So, a confident yes. Great, let’s start!

Mindy: What was the first musician or band you remember loving as a kid?

Katrina: Oh - Nickelback!

Mindy: Nooooooo.

Katrina: Hands down, Chad Kroeger was my first love. I don’t tell a lot of people that because of that reaction. But for the few who do know, they’ll still tag me in memes about them to this day.

Mindy: I’m just so happy this is how we opened the interview.

Katrina: They’re a Canadian band!

Mindy: Honestly, their song Hero from the Spiderman soundtrack was a banger that never got the credit it deserved. I get it.

Mindy: Alright, if you could be a fictional character, from either film, T.V. or a book, who would you be?

Katrina: I want to say Hermione from Harry Potter, but I feel like that’s not realistic.

Mindy: That would be such a stressful life. She really went through it.

Katrina: Oh, yeah. She went through some stuff. What’s the other girl’s name?

Mindy: Luna?

Katrina: Luna! Okay, I’m her.

Mindy: Love Luna! So is that your final answer then?

Katrina: I think maybe it should be Harry Potter actually, because I just love Harry Potter, but...

Mindy: Of the three, you seemed most confident with Hermione, if this helps.

Katrina: Yeah, she’s most relatable. Wait, what are my options again?

Mindy: It can be any character from a film, T.V. or book.

Katrina: This is so tough. What are yours?

Mindy: Only you would ask the question back, so considerate. My instinct is to say Jessica Jones, but her life actually seems awful. What if I make it easier, choose one you would trade lives with, and one who you identify with, because I feel like we’d both have such different answers for those.

Katrina: Okay then I would trade with Alice from Alice in Wonderland because of the world she’s in, and I’m Hermione.

Mindy: Perfect.

Mindy: Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe?

Katrina: Audrey Hepburn.

Mindy: I was expecting Marilyn because she’s such a popular request for tattoos!

Katrina: It used to be! I think in your preteens it’s common to prefer Marilyn Monroe because she’s this beautiful figure-

Mindy: With a tragic and therefore relatable life...

Katrina: Sure. But now I think Audrey Hepburn just has so much class. I like looking into why people choose the popular figures they want on their body, so I’ve taken time to research more on both of them actually.

Mindy: That’s great! Have you ever tattooed Audrey Hepburn on anyone?

Katrina: I’ve had inquiries but I’ve never done it. I’ve for sure done Marilyn Monroe though, that’s a big one.

Mindy: So I guess you already answered part of this, but do you enjoy Harry Potter, and if so what house would you be in?

Katrina: I’m going to go with Gryffindor because all of the best characters are in that house, but whenever I’ve done the online quizzes I get that I’m a Hufflepuff.

Mindy: I feel like the one you want and what you actually are are seldom the same. The quizzes say I’m Gryffindor every time, even when I’ve manipulated my answers to get Slytherin. That in itself should make me a Slytherin.

Katrina: Right.

Mindy: What are your three favourite films of all time?

Katrina: This is a tough one. I’m going to say Matilda, because I’ve always loved that movie, Whiplash because it’s just a very good and inspiring movie.

Mindy: I think that one’s inspiring to anyone doing something that’s creative or out of the norm, not just music.

Katrina: Exactly! I think lastly I would say the The Town just because I’ve watched it so much.

Mindy: I don’t think I know that one.

Katrina: The Town.

Mindy: I know nothing.

Katrina: Ben Affleck. It’s about Boston...

Mindy: I feel nothing.

Katrina: You should watch it. It’s good. But I’m actually going to go with Tommy Boy instead.

Mindy: That’s a movie I know! Loved the ‘90s.

Katrina. Yes!

Mindy: Okay, word association time. I’m going to say a word and you’re going to say the first word that comes to mind. Please don’t be scared, it just says a lot about who you are as person and we’re all judging you.

Katrina: Great.

Mindy: First word - "sandwich."

Katrina: Peanut butter and jelly.

Mindy: "Sushi."

Katrina: Raw. Love sushi.

Mindy: So...raw?

Katrina: Sashimi.

Mindy: Raw Sashimi. Okay, next - "buffet."

Katrina: Oh...no.

Mindy: Just no?

Katrina: I can’t do those.

Mindy: I’m so sorry.

Katrina: Just put no.

Mindy: I was hungry when I wrote these and I’m seeing now just how lost in the moment I got, my apologies.

Mindy: Next - "insane."

Katrina: Creatives - we are misjudged a lot of the time.

Mindy: I agree! Next - "happiness."

Katrina: Complicated.

Mindy: Very true. Next - "V.H.S."

Katrina: Childhood.

Mindy: Okay, I’d now like you to please finish these sentences: “I can’t wait to go home tonight and...”

Katrina: Take a nap.

Mindy: A classic. The next sentence is “I’d be nervous about tattooing a ___________ on somebody’s __________.”

Katrina: And this is going on SooToday, right?

Mindy: Absolutely.

Katrina: Honestly, it would be any script on the throat.

Mindy: I imagine that’s a pretty sensitive area also.

Katrina: Yes. It’s also difficult because they have to be straight on their back and you’re often working around an adam’s apple and sweat. Was my answer supposed to be funny?

Mindy: No, I love an honest answer! I truly would not have thought of that.

Mindy: "My favourite things in the entire world are..."

Katrina: My dog, camp and all forms of art.

Mindy: Beautiful.

Mindy: Next I have a question that is very important to me because I truly believe it says a lot about a person. Are you ready?

Katrina: Yes!

Mindy: What is your favourite colour?

Katrina: You might not think this is a complex question but it is.

Mindy: I agree!

Katrina: Since I was a little kid it’s always been pink, but I want to say now it’s more in the grey spectrum because of the charcoal work I do. I guess grey, even though it’s not a colour.

Mindy: I honestly appreciate the thought out responses this question gets.

Mindy: Okay, say I have a persistent pain in my bottom left wisdom tooth, would it be okay to just see if that goes away or should I be getting that checked out?

Katrina: Maybe procrastinate a little bit more and see what happens. Wait until it gets really bad before you make a final decision.

Mindy: I like that idea a lot, actually. It also fits my budget.

Katrina: No, Mindy. I think you should get that checked immediately.

Mindy: Okay, thank you.

Katrina: Is this what’s actually happening right now? Are you avoiding the dentist?

Mindy: Katrina Thibodeau, always a pleasure. Thank you for taking the time to let us know a little bit more about you today. I appreciate it!

Katrina: Of course, thank you!
