Job title: Multimedia Reporter

Location: Sault Ste. Marie, ON, a part of the Village Media network, is looking for a full-time Multimedia Reporter.

The successful candidate must be able to track down breaking news and report it as it happens, and dig for original stories, pitch story ideas and keep the community informed about what’s important to them.

A SooToday reporter will be able to collect and analyze information about newsworthy events through background research, interviews and observance or investigation.

The successful candidate must be able to write, edit and deliver interesting, accurate, and consistent news and feature stories for publication online - and provide content on a consistent daily basis.

The candidate will be able to take, edit and upload photos and/or videos to illustrate the stories submitted – and will have prior online publishing experience.

The position will report to the SooToday Community Editor. On a daily basis, you will be asked to cover a wide variety of subjects, including hard news (crime, politics, government spending, court decisions, collisions), special events, human-interest features and new business profiles.

Ideal qualifications for the position include:

  • A post-secondary degree/diploma in journalism or related field preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years experience writing and editing
  • Superior language skills and knowledge of journalism ethics and law
  • Photography, video, and editing software experience considered an asset
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Organized, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work across platforms including broadcast, online, & social media
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to work a variety of shifts, including occasional evenings, nights, and weekends when required - under deadline pressure
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong ability for storytelling
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle
  • A strong knowledge of Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding community
