We are looking for a dynamic and entrepreneurial thought leader to join our team, one who will oversee all financial initiatives in support of both academic and administrative operations. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the finance team in advancing Algoma University’s mission and strategic priorities; will have a vision in adapting best practices regarding processes and how leading-edge technology can transform the student and educational experience. Given our geographical location(s) and three campus sites, Algoma is committed to reimagining higher education for the 21st century.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance & Operations, the Director of Finance is a key member of the University’s leadership team, with an opportunity for career advancement and growth within the Algoma University. The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the University. The areas of responsibility include  budgeting and forecasting; the year-end audit and the preparation of the annual audited financial statements; accounts receivable, billings and financial aid; trust and endowment accounting and reporting; cash management; investments and reporting; internal controls; fixed asset accounting and financing of capital expenditures; payroll; accounts payable; procurement and risk management.

The Director promotes effective financial leadership by providing support for the University's strategic and operational objectives. The Director is accountable for the development, implementation and evaluation of financial policies, programs and practices across the University.

The Director will be responsible for the following:

  • Successfully launching key strategic initiatives
  • Leading through a period of transformational change while maintaining operational excellence and a focus on high levels of client service
  • Working collaboratively with academic and other units
  • Seeking external funds for research and educational initiatives
  • Advising on policy to the University’s senior leadership team
  • Leading, mentoring and further developing the Finance team

The ideal candidate will have:

  • University business degree and a professional accounting designation, or an equivalent combination of education, professional certification and professional work experience.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years' experience in positions demonstrating progression and increased responsibility at a senior level, preferably in higher education or the broader public sector.
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Training, College and University (MTCU) operating manual, funding mechanisms and higher education policy, tuition fee framework, Ancillary Fee Protocol and other guidelines;
  • Knowledge of the Broader Public Sector Directives
  • Ability to maintain privileged and confidential information
  • Excellent time management, organizational and problem solving skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with the myriad of individuals and organizations that Finance deals with on a daily basis
  • Experience in working within union environment
  • Ability to interpret and analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and forecasts
  • Ability to effectively communicate financial and accounting information to university departments, senior leadership, Finance Committee, Board of Governors, lending institutions, government and other external bodies.
  • Proficient in the use of computer applications (Microsoft, Google Suite, AccPac, ADP, etc)
  • An understanding of the University's Special Mission
