The City’s Public Works and Engineering Services Department would like to provide the following winter reminders and messages.

Public Works crews keep roadways as clear as possible for the safety of drivers and emergency response vehicles during snow events. Public Works is responsible for maintaining 1,225 lane kilometers of roadways and approximately 210 kilometers of sidewalks in addition to bus stops (approximately 500) and some designated lane ways. The maintenance of roadways are prioritized with highways and main roads done first and sometimes getting multiple passes.

Motorists are reminded to drive according to the conditions and to give snow plow operators room to clear routes safely and efficiently. Under By-law 77-200-5(14), parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. however, during a winter event, residents are also asked to not park on city streets during the day. This will assist in the efficiency of snow removal.

During the winter months sidewalks should not be blocked at any time in order to facilitate snow removal and allow for usage by pedestrians. Residents are reminded that the snow plowed to the end of their driveway is their responsibility. Under By-law 2008-131 Section 9(k) residents must manage snow within their own properties and shall not move it across the street or other neighbouring properties.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their cooperation and working together to keep our roadways and designated sidewalks clear and safe this winter.

For more information, residents may contact Public Works at 705-759-5201 or email [email protected]. When weather events occur, visit the City’s website along with Facebook and Twitter for details.
