On Tuesday, November 6th, 2018, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service crews responded to numerous calls of a fire in an apartment building in the city's east-end.

Shortly after 6p.m, crews responded to a fire in an apartment building in the 0 to 100 block of Huntington Park. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire. Further investigation revealed the cause of the fire relates to improper discarding of smoking materials.

"Smoking materials need to be disposed of properly to prevent fires from happening," said Fire Prevention Officer Carlo Provenzano. "As a reminder to all citizens, please take the time to properly dispose of smoking materials by dowsing them with water or having a metal container filled with sand to extinguish them properly."

There is extensive damage to the unit in the building. There were no injuries to report.
