Still time to provide feedback

At its Bicycle Network public information meeting held on May 2, 2019, the City’s Engineering and Planning division were pleased to welcome close to 100 participants who discussed the City’s bicycle network routes. Staff presented Sault Ste. Marie’s Cycling Master Plan, with a specific focus on the routes that are expected to be implemented this summer:

• Pine Route – Queen Street to Northern Avenue.
• Queen Route – Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club to Dacey Road.
• Willow Route – McNabb Street to Northern Avenue.
• Willoughby /Wawanosh Route – Grandmont Crescent to Pine Street.

The response to the information session was overwhelmingly positive and staff received many comments and suggestions from the public regarding bicycle route dimensions, signage, intersection design, safety issues, route extensions, and more.

As a result of the community engagement, cycling lanes (i.e. painted lines, bike symbols), are recommended for Pine Street, Willow Avenue, and Queen Street. This is based on current levels of traffic and vehicle speeds on these roads. For Willoughby and Wawanosh Avenue, “bike route” signage will be installed along these streets.

Pine, Willow and Queen Street currently have parking prohibitions. To implement cycle lanes effectively on these streets, it is recommended that the remaining on-street parking be removed. On-street parking will be maintained on Willoughby/Wawanosh, although it is recommended that some parking be removed between Willow Avenue and Great Northern Road. These measures are recommended to help reduce potential conflicts between motorists and cyclists.

If residents were unable to attend the open house, an online information portal has been established to learn more about the City’s initiative and to share feedback. To view the online portal, visit www.ShapeTheSault.ca/bikessm

"We appreciate the valued feedback that was provided by our community. We want to ensure that those who were not able to attend the session get access to the information presented, and provide input", said city planner Steve Turco. "While there are some technical matters to adjust with the implementation of the proposed bike lanes, it is evident that the residents of this community are interested in healthy active living and sustainable forms of transportation. We appreciate all the input received to date."

A report to City Council regarding the proposed bike routes will be presented at the May 21, 2019 Council meeting.
