Woman charged with three counts of assault

Accused awaits bail hearing after allegedly causing damage at two businesses

A 41-year-old woman faces multiple charges, including thee counts of assault, after reports of a person damaging windows in the 200 block of Bay Street, causing about $1,500 in damages, a police news release said.

On Nov 29, officers with Sault Ste. Marie Police Services patrol unit responded to reports of an incident at an unidentified business at about 3 p.m. 

Prior to police arrival, security staff detained the person, later identified as the accused, according to the release. While attempting to hold the accused, they allegedly assaulted staff by pushing them and attempting to punch them, the release said.

The accused was arrested when police arrived.

Further investigation revealed on Nov. 28, the accused allegedly punched an employee at an unidentified business in the 700 block of Queen Street East, stole a licence plate from a vehicle in the parking lot, dumped a bag of garbage inside the business and pulled the fire alarm before leaving the area, the release said.

In relation to both incidents Rebecca Gardener is charged with:

  • Three counts of assault
  • Two counts of mischief under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • False alarm of fire

The accused is in custody pending a bail hearing.
