A 32-year-old is charged with assaulting a police officer after she allegedly kicked a Sault Ste. Marie cop who was trying to arrest her.

The altercation occurred Thursday around 7:30 a.m., after police received multiple reports of someone causing a disturbance — first in the 1500 block of Queen Street East and later on Wellington Street East.

“Officers were dispatched to the area and found the accused disrupting traffic,” says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “When advised to step off the roadway, the accused fled from police into oncoming traffic.”

Police say officers eventually caught up to the suspect, who allegedly resisted arrest and kicked one of the officers.

“Officers were able to gain control of the accused and arrest them,” the release continues.

A follow-up search uncovered small amounts of suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl, police allege.

Nisha Nemeth is charged with:

  • Assaulting a Peace Officer with Intent to Resist Arrest
  • Resisting Peace Officer
  • Possession of Prohibited Substance x2

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Nemeth is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
