Suspect found with loaded handgun during downtown 'high-risk arrest': police

Officers responded to Albert Street East yesterday afternoon after receiving reports of a man with a gun in the area

Police have charged Kaleb Demour following a high-risk arrest on Albert Street East yesterday afternoon.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service states that officers responded to the 300 block of Albert Street East after receiving reports of an individual "waving a gun" in the area.

Upon his arrest, police say Demour was found in possession of ammunition as well as a loaded .22 calibre handgun.

The 27-year-old accused faces a number of weapons related charges as a result.

On June 22, 2021, [the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service] charged 27-year-old Kaleb Demour with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Around 3:45 p.m., officers with Patrol Services responded to reports of a man waving a gun in the 300 block of Albert Street East.

Officers arrived a short time later and secured the area. A man matching the description of the person with a gun was observed exiting a residence and officers executed a high-risk arrest.

While executing the arrest, [it is alleged that] the accused resisted but officers were able to gain control of the accused. A subsequent search of the accused located a loaded .22 calibre handgun in his waistband and ammunition. Later, while in custody the accused spat in a holding area at the Police Services building.

He is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, knowingly possession an unauthorized weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting a peace officer, mischief, breach of recognizance, and two counts of breach of probation.

He was held for bail court.
