The Special Investigations Unit has cleared Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officers of any wrongdoing in an arrest in early-December where a 38-year-old man was diagnosed with serious injuries.

Following is a full release from the SIU on the decision:

On Dec. 3, 2020, a 38-year-old man was arrested by Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officers and subsequently diagnosed with serious injuries at hospital. Because there was some prospect that the complainant’s injuries were incurred in the course of his arrest, the SIU was notified of the incident and opened a file. The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe an arresting officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injuries.
