Shelter in place issued at Northern Ave E residence (update)

After lengthy negotiations, police have arrested wanted suspect who was inside the building

8:38 p.m. update:

Sault Ste. Marie police arrested wanted 34-year-old Devon Floyd at 7:45 p.m. following an investigation at the Columbus Club residence on Northern Avenue East that led to shelter-in-place order. 

Police say they determined the accused was inside the residence but would not leave the building when requested. 

Floyd was wanted in connection with a firearm investigation that occurred on Pine Street on March 6.

The emergency services unit and crisis negotiators were called to assist with the investigation, police said in a news release. 

After lengthy negotiations, Floyd left the residence and was arrested. 

He is now facing the following charges: 

  • Pointing a firearm (two counts)
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Careless use of firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a restricted firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Fail to comply with release order (two counts)

Floyd is held in custody pending a bail hearing, police said.

Police are no longer on the scene.

5:15 p.m. update: 

Five Sault Ste. Marie police cruisers and a tactical unit are on the scene at the Columbus Club building in the 200 block of Northern Avenue East.

A couple of officers have also been seen outside the building.

4:12 p.m. story: 

Sault Ste. Marie police are now on the scene at a multi-unit residence in the 200 block of Northern Avenue for an ongoing investigation. 

Officers have secured the area and instructed anyone inside the residence to isolate and seek safety until further notice. 

Police are asking to avoid the area during the investigation.
