NEWS RELEASE
SAULT STE. MARIE POLICE SERVICE
****************************
Recently the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received two complaints regarding frauds associated with someone being held in custody.

In the two complaints, victims are contacted by individuals claiming to be loved ones arrested or lawyers of a loved one and requesting money to secure the release of the loved one. During these conversations, the fraudster tells the victim there is a gag order on the case and not to tell anyone. The victims in these cases sent thousands of dollars to secure the release of their loved ones.

We want to remind the public that in Canada sums of money are not used to secure the release of someone in custody.

If someone contacts you requesting money while also asking you not to tell anyone, it is a sign that something is not right. If you ever have any concerns about a potential scam or fraudulent activity, please contact police by calling 705-949-6300. Do not share personal information with anyone you do not know over the phone. Remember, you are not obligated to share your information with others. Do not be shy about asking the person on the phone questions about why they are requesting money or personal information.

If you have second thoughts, end the conversation. It is not rude, it is cautious. Protect yourself and your personal information at all times.

The legal system in Canada will not ask for money, gift cards or any other monetary gift in order to perform duties.
