Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Chief Hugh Stevenson has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Merit of Police Forces, which recognizes exceptional service or performance of duty over an extended period of time.

Established in October 2000, the Order of Merit of the Police Forces “honours the leadership and exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of the Canadian Police Services, and recognizes their commitment to this country,” according to the Governor General of Canada website.

“I’m very honoured and humbled that I was selected, and I look forward to bringing more success to public safety in this city with the police service behind us,” Stevenson told SooToday Thursday.

The Police Services Board took time to congratulate Stevenson during Thursday’s board meeting.

“I want to say that our chief has been awarded this medal - we congratulate him today as a board, and I want to formalize it by bringing it forward, and we thank him for all of his service over the years,” said Police Services Board Chair John Bruno.

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano joined other Police Services Board members in congratulating Stevenson for his accomplishment.

“I didn’t know much about this order, chief, prior to seeing it on the agenda,” he said. “I read about it, and congratulate you for receiving it, and certainly a distinction both for you and Sault Ste. Marie Police Service - so congratulations.”

Stevenson’s policing career spans more than three decades, including stints with the Peel Regional Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and serving as director of the Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario.
