Sault makes Macleans annual list of most dangerous places

Sault Ste. Marie has cracked the top 50 in multiple areas for Macleans annual most dangerous places rankings.

Every year, the magazine creates an interactive tool to show people how their community ranks against others across Canada. 

The rankings are based on StatsCan's 2018 crime severity index, the last full year that information is available. More details on how they rank the most dangerous places is available here

For all crime, the Sault comes in at 43rd on the list of most dangerous places in Canada, out of 237. This is a jump from the previous year, when the Sault stood at 66th.

When the rankings are broken down, the Sault appears in the top 50 in three areas.

It is ninth for break and enter, 26th for cannabis trafficking and 30th for robbery.

Notably, the Sault came in at 39th for homicide, a drastic jump from last year's list, which had the Sault 77th in this category. For the 2020 list, based on 2018's stats, two homicides were reported. For the 2019 list, based on 2017 stats, there was one.

The homicide rate for the Sault (calculated by incidents per 100,000 population) is 2.64 per cent. The Canadian average is 1.76 per cent.

The Sault ranked near the bottom for impaired driving, coming in at 225th. Last year's list had the Sault at 220th.
