Police seize fentanyl, replica handguns during stolen vehicle investigation

Three people face charges

Sault Police have arrested and charged three people after investigating a report of a stolen vehicle.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service reports that the vehicle in question was located on Trunk Road with the accused inside.

During a search of the area, officers located two replica handguns, pepper spray, stolen bank cards and suspected fentanyl.

Full text of the Sault Police news release follows:

On Nov. 15, 2020 officers with Patrol Services arrested 35-year-old Nadine Nichols, 29-year-old Dano Ruttan and 27-year-old Tyler Vary for possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

At 9:50 a.m., police received a report a Jeep, had been stolen overnight. At 11:38 p.m. officers attended the 600 block of Trunk Road and observed the vehicle in the area. Officers observed the three accused in the vehicle; Mr. Ruttan was in the driver’s seat, Ms. Nichols was in the front passenger seat and Mr. Vary was seated in the rear of the vehicle.

The three accused were arrested. A subsequent search of the area of arrest located two replica handguns, a canister of pepper spray as well as a wallet with bank cards that had been reported stolen on Nov. 1, 2020. Mr. Ruttan was also found in possession of approximately .62 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl.

Ms. Nichols is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and breach of probation. She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 21, 2020.

Mr. Ruttan is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of possession of stolen credit cards, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He was held for bail court.

Mr. Vary is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon and breach of recognizance. He was held for bail court.
