Police investigation reroutes traffic in east end of downtown (10:47 p.m. Update)

10:47 p.m. update

Police sent the following update: The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to advise the public that Queen Street and Wellington Street East are now open to traffic.

Just after 6 p.m. today officers became involved with a call for service at 864 Queen Street East regarding a male with a firearm.  

Officers with Investigation Services, The Emergency Services Unit and The Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service contained the area and restricted access for the safety of the public.

At 8:52 p.m. a lone male was taken into custody.  The investigation is continuing and further information will be released when it becomes available.

9:52 p.m. update

Streets downtown are opening and traffic is beginning to flow normally in the area.

There is a heavy police presence downtown centred around the area of the Algonquin Hotel.

Foot and vehicular traffic in the blocks surrounded by the intersections of Bay and East Sts. (travelling toward Queen St.) Bay and Pim Sts. as well as Queen and Pilgrim Sts. is being turned back from entering the area.

Police confirm witness' reports that a drone is in the air over the area as well. 

Police are positioned at intersections to turn back traffic.
