Police cruiser collision snarls morning traffic (update, 4 photos)

Crash with SUV left cruiser heavily damaged

12:10 p.m. update:
A 37-year-old woman had been charged with vehicle theft following two early morning collisions on Pine Street.

According to a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service news release, the Pine and Wellington East crash occurred after officers were dispatched to the area to investigate reports of a woman weaving in and out of traffic on a bicycle.

The cruiser involved in the collision drove into the intersection as the officer attempted to stop the cyclist.

Sault Police say the cyclist then jumped into a vehicle belonging to a driver who had stopped to offer assistance at the scene. The accused fled north on Pine Street and lost control of the vehicle at Pine and MacDonald Avenue.

As a result of these occurrences, Amanda Maynard is scheduled to appear in court  on Oct. 5.

The investigation is ongoing.

Original 8:30 a.m. information:
This morning just before 8 a.m., a collision occurred involving a police cruiser and an SUV at the intersection of Pine Street and Wellington Street East.

The cruiser sustained heavy damage.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
