Ontario Provincial Police have issued a new statement today on an alleged long weekend assault at a camp north of the city, replacing one accused’s name with another and upgrading charges to now include assault causing bodily harm.

Police say the incident happened on Aug. 6 at a seasonal residence on Whispering Pines Road and involved a campfire and an argument between four men.

Corey St. Louis, who was charged with a single count of assault but says he wasn’t involved, is no longer mentioned in a corrected version of a news release issued by OPP today.

OPP were unable to immediately provide an update on the status of the assault charge against St. Louis, who says he finds the situation frustrating.

St. Louis said he was at the courthouse this morning with his lawyer where he signed an affidavit swearing that he was not at the alleged incident and had no involvement. He said he received a call from OPP acknowledging what St. Louis said at this point appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

“They did apologize and said the charges are going to be dropped,” said St. Louis.

But he said he’s not clear as to when the situation will be resolved.

“Apparently it doesn’t take overnight. They can charge you real quick, but they can’t uncharge you,” said St. Louis.

An OPP spokesperson told SooToday she could not confirm whether an apology had been issued, or on the status of St. Louis' charge.

“The investigation remains ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment at this time,” said Const. Bev Gauthier.

St. Louis said he has asked for documents that might explain how his name came up and who the arresting officer was.

In a release issued today, police say Christopher Gilmar, 37, of Sault Ste. Marie, faces charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm. He has a Sept. 18 court date.

Jamie Gilmar, 34, also of the Sault, who was charged with two counts of assault and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, now faces one charge of assault and one charge of assault causing bodily harm, according to the updated OPP news release. He was remanded into custody following a bail court appearance on Tuesday.
