Man charged with impaired after suspected meth seized during arrest

Police have charged Lorne Baird with impaired driving after officers responded to a report of a man sleeping in a vehicle on Walnut Street yesterday morning.

In a release issued today, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service reports that attending officers believed the 49-year-old accused to be impaired by drugs, and he was arrested.

A quantity of suspected methamphetamine was located during a search of the arrest area.

On May 18, 2021, officers with Patrol Services charged 49-year-old Lorne Baird with impaired driving – alcohol and drugs.

At 7:40 a.m., officers responded to a call of a man sleeping in a vehicle in the 0-100 block of Walnut Street. Upon arrival, officers saw a man who appeared to be waking up in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Upon speaking with the accused, officers developed grounds to believe his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs. He was arrested.

A subsequent search of the area of arrest found the accused to be in possession of approximately one gram of a substance believed to be methamphetamine. He later completed a drug recognition evaluation in which he performed poorly. He is charged with impaired driving – alcohol and drugs and possession of a controlled substance.

He is scheduled to appear in court on June 28, 2021.
