Man accused of assaulting police, resisting arrest

Police say the 43-year-old attempted to steal items from the same business twice in one evening

A 43-year-old man has been accused of assaulting police and resisting arrest after it is alleged that he attended the same Great Northern Road business twice in the same day and stole merchandise.

A news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says that Peter Tarbox “struck an officer in the face” while resisting arrest on Saturday evening after officers responded to the first theft incident.

Following his release that same evening, police say that he went to the same business, threatened an employee and stole approximately $390 worth of items.

On Sept. 24, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 43-year-old Peter Tarbox with resisting and assaulting a peace officer.

Around 9 p.m., [it is alleged that] the accused attended a business in the 400 block of Great Northern Road, selected various items from the business and left without attempting to pay. Police were called, and upon arriving, officers observed the accused at the corner of Second Line East and Old Garden River Road.  

Officers attempted to arrest the accused, but they attempted to run, and struck an officer in the face and continued to resist. Officers were able to gain control of the accused and they were arrested. A subsequent search of the accused found them to be in possession of the items reported stolen from the business.

The accused is charged with
    •    Assaulting a peace officer
    •    Resisting or obstructing a peace officer
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Fail to comply with undertaking

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 12, 2022.

After being released, around 9:30 p.m. the accused re-attended the same business in the 400 block of Great Northern Road and filled a shopping cart with items. An employee confronted the accused, at which time [it is alleged that] the accused threatened the employee, before grabbing approximately $390 worth of items and leaving without attempting to pay.

Officers responded and located the accused in the area. The accused was arrested and charged with
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Uttering threats

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 12, 2022.
