Two dead in Goulais Ave. incident (9 a.m. update)

Building sustains fire damage, witnesses say they heard gun shots

8:55 a.m. update:

Two people are dead after this morning's fire and gunfire incident on Goulais Avenue.

"Officers are currently securing on scene, involving two residences in the 100 block of Goulais Avenue," Sault Police say in an email.

"A victim was found in the driveway of a residence, taken to hospital, and was later pronounced deceased at hospital. Another victim was located in a residence that was on fire and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of death of the two people remains under investigation, but police can confirm gun shots occurred. This is believed to be an isolated incident as the people involved are known to each other."

"This is an active investigation and further details will be released as they become available," Police said.

7:45 a.m. update:
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service stated in a news release that when officers arrived at the scene, an injured person was found in the driveway and taken to hospital.

"During the initial investigation it was determined the person was assaulted," the release says. "Officers are actively investigating and remain on scene as this is an active incident."

Original information:
Witnesses say they heard gun shots and screaming at around 5 a.m. Friday morning.

A number of residents lined Goulais Avenue watching a heavy police and fire presence. First responders were focused on a large house that had sustained fire damage. A ladder could be seen going to the top window.

Firefighters were going in and out of the building and it appeared they were trying to revive someone on the scene. An ambulance and police car sped away at around 6:30 a.m.
