Hyundai hits pedestrian after taking out pole, hitting restaurant

The driver is accused of having a suspended licence, no insurance

SAULT STE MARIE POLICE SERVICE

On June 20, 2017 at approximately 1:30 a.m. officers with the Patrol Services Division and Traffic Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Wellington Street West and John Street. 

As a result of this collision, the intersection was closed to traffic and was reopened at 5:30 a.m.

A 2013 white Hyundia 4-door sedan was travelling Westbound on Wellington Street West approaching the intersection of Wellington Street West and John Street. 

The vehicle was driven by a 20-year-old female and had 2 other occupants inside. The vehicle lost control and struck a traffic signal pole at the intersection severing it.

The vehicle continued on and struck the building located at 192 Wellington Street West. The vehicle then struck a pedestrian that was walking near the building on the North side of Wellington Street West before coming to rest.

The pedestrian, a 39-year-old female and one passenger in the vehicle were transported to the hospital by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the motor vehicle, a 20-year-old female from Sault Ste. Marie, has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of careless driving and one count of driving while suspended. 

She has also been charged with one count of operating a motor vehicle without insurance under the compulsory automobile insurance act.

Officers with the Traffic Services Division and Forensic Identification Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are continuing the investigation into this incident.
