A Sault Ste. Marie man is facing weapons charges after a traffic stop on Tuesday morning.

In a press release issued this afternoon, police say they conducted a traffic stop around 7:51 a.m. yesterday on Wallace Terrace.

Police say officers discovered the driver was suspended, and further investigation revealed the vehicle was not fit for operation.

According to police, a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a gun case with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun, along with ammunition and various firearm parts.

The accused did not have a licence for the firearm, police say.

As a result, Shaun Nelson has been arrested and charged with possession of a loaded firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of ammunition knowing its possession is unauthorized and driving while suspended.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on July 12, 2021.
