The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) has officially launched its annual Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) Campaign and is reminding the motorists to celebrate the holiday season responsibly.

A news release issued by the SSMPS urges residents to plan ahead by making arrangements with friends or family, or call a cab for a safe ride home.

Anyone caught driving under the influence could have their license suspended and vehicle impounded. An impaired driving conviction may lead to heavy fines, jail time, mandatory alcohol education and treatment programs, and ignition interlock program.

Motorists can expect to see SSMPS and other police agencies throughout the community during this year's Festive RIDE Campaign.

During the 2019 Festive RIDE Campaign, 1,705 vehicles were checked resulting in:
    •    16 roadside tests conducted
    •    Zero three-day licence suspensions
    •    Seven criminal charges for blood alcohol concentration .80 plus
    •    16 Highway Traffic Act charges
