Driver accused of running red light. Hitting police car

SAULT STE MARIE POLICE SERVICE

At approximately 11:10 a.m. today officers with the Patrol Services Division of The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service were involved in a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Wellington Street East and Bruce Street.

A police services vehicle carrying two officers and one in-custody passenger was travelling Westbound on Wellington Street East near Bruce Street. At the same time, a vehicle travelling Northbound on Bruce Street travelled through a red light and into the intersection. 

The vehicles collided causing significant damage to both vehicles. Several witnesses remained at the scene and offered assistance. 

A short time later, one officer and the in-custody passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 44-year-old male from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with one count of failing to stop for a red light under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
