Officers Dispose of Explosive Devices

Today at approximately 9 a.m. officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Explosive Disposal Unit responded to a call for service at a vacant house in the 300 block of Fifth Line East.

A crew that had been working on demolishing the vacant residence discovered what they believed to be 2 explosive devices inside of a garage behind the residence. The crew was able to safely vacate the area and contact police.

At the scene, officers located 2 items that were described as homemade explosive devices. There was no evidence to suggest that someone had broken into the building and the devices appeared to have been there for a long period of time.

Officers were able to safely retrieve and dispose of those devices at the scene. This incident is a good example of citizens acting safely to recognize a threat and contact police.  We encourage citizens to contact police immediately if they encounter a suspected explosive device. This will allow specially trained officers to attend and safely dispose of the item.
