Collision closes Highway 17 between 6th Line and Macintyre Road (3 photos, updated: highway reopened)

Road closed to traffic in both directions; investigation is ongoing

4:25 p.m. update:

The highway is reopen in both directions. Sault Police say 10 people were taken to hospital, some with life-threatening injuries. More here.

1:22 p.m. update:

A witness, who described the crash as "very serious" tells SooToday that four vehicles were involved, including a commercial box truck.

1:00 p.m. update:

Sault Ste. Marie Police confirm they are still on-scene of a multi-vehicle collision in the 2600 block of Great Northern Road.

Police say the road remains closed to traffic in both directions.

Travelers are urged to avoid the area and, if possible, find alternate routes. It is anticipated traffic delays will be lengthy.

The investigation is ongoing.

Sault Police say to expect Highway 17 north of the city to be closed in both directions for a significant amount of time. No further details on the collision are available from police at this time.

Officers are currently on scene of a motor vehicle collision in the 2600 block of Great Northern Road, between 6th Line and Macintyre Road.

Police urge the public to avoid the area as this is an active scene and the road is closed to traffic in both directions.

SooToday reports at least three ambulances, four police cruisers, and volunteer fire fighters responding to the scene.
