City police alert Saultites to texting scam

Phishing scheme aims to collect banking information from unsuspecting mobile device users

Sault Ste. Marie Police Services are using social media to alert people to a new, very convincing scam.

"One of our officers noticed this scam Wednesday that is sent via text message," say police.

In the scam, an unknown person or persons text mobile numbers with what looks like a refund from a company commonly used by many people.

"If you click the link it will bring you to a page where you are eventually asked to enter your banking information. Take a look and be sure not to share your banking information with anyone that you have not verified."
