As the Lake Superior State Lakers continue to battle for positioning in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings, a tough road trip resulted in a single point over the weekend.

Playing at Minnesota State Mankato, the Lakers skated to a 2-2 tie with the Mavericks on Saturday night, though Minnesota State scored an extra point thanks to an overtime goal by Parker Tuomie.

Gordon Defiel stopped 31 shots for the Lakers, who hold a conference record of 8-10-3-2 (11-13-4 overall). Gage Torrel and Mitch Hults completed the Lakers scoring.

Daniel Brickley and Ian Scheid had a goal and an assist each for Minnesota State. Goaltender Cole Huggins made 27 saves.

Minnesota State opened the weekend with a 4-2 victory on Friday night.

Sean Flanagan had a goal and an assist while Josh French assisted on a pair of goals for Minnesota State on Friday night. Tuomi, Brad McClure and Zach Stepan also scored. Huggins made 20 saves.

Luke Morgan and Josh Nenadal scored for the Lakers. Anthony Nellis assisted on both goals. Defiel stopped 30 shots.

The Lakers continue to battle Ferris State, Alaska and Alabama Huntsville for positioning in the WCHA standings. Lake State entered the weekend coming off an important sweep of Alabama Huntsville last weekend at home.

After a weekend off, the Lakers return to action on Feb. 10 in the first game of a weekend set at Taffy Abel Arena against Alaska Anchorage.
