Lakers split conference action with Bowling Green

The final home action for the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team saw a split with WCHA foe Bowling Green State University

The Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team returned to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action over the weekend with a pair of home games against the Bowling Green State University Falcons.

Coming off a split in non-conference action at Michigan last weekend, the Lakers came away with a split against Bowling Green as well, winning the weekend opener on Friday before Bowling Green returned the favour on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena.

In Friday night’s opener the Lakers scored four times in the third period en route to a 4-2 victory.

Anthony Nellis, Luke Morgan, Max Humitz and Diego Cuglietta scored for the Lakers. Gage Torrel and Matt McArdle assisted on two goals each. Lake State netminder Gordon Defiel stopped 35 shots.

Sean Walker and Frederic Letourneau scored for Bowling Green

On Saturday night Bowling Green scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and secure a 5-2 victory. Mitchell McLain paced Bowling Green with three goals while Lukas Craggs added a goal and an assist. Kevin Dunbar had the other goal for the Falcons. Torrel and Brayden Gelsinger scored for the Lakers.

With the split, Lake State’s conference record sits at 5-7-0-0 (8-8-0 overall) while Bowling Green is now 7-4-1-1 in conference action and 8-8-2 overall.

The Lakers return to action on the road next weekend at Bemidji State in the final action for the team ahead of the Christmas break. The team returns to action following the Christmas break on Dec. 30 in the first game of a weekend set at Nebraska-Omaha.
