Lakers season ends on road

The Lake State hockey team was swept on the road by the Michigan Tech Huskies in playoff action

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association season came to an end for the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday night.

The Michigan Tech Huskies beat the Lakers 8-0 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich. to sweep the first round best-of-three series between the two schools.

Defenceman Mark Auk had a goal and two assists for the Huskies while Joel L’Esperance scored a pair of goals. Gavin Gould, Shane Hanna, Mike Neville and Reid Sturos added a goal and an assist each for Michigan Tech. Chris Leibinger had the other Huskies goal. Matt Roy assisted on three goals.

Michigan Tech goaltender Angus Redmond stopped 16 shots for the shutout.

Gordon Defiel made 30 saves for the Lakers.

On Friday night in the series opener, Jake Jackson had two goals and an assist as the Huskies skated to a 6-4 victory.

Sturos had a goal and two assists for the Huskies while L’Esperance, Hanna, Neville and Cliff Watson assisted on two goals each. Alex Gillies, Alex Smith and Mitch Reinke had the other Michigan Tech goals.

Mitch Hults had a goal and three assists to pace the Lakers offensively. Gage Torrel, Luke Morgan and Gus Correale also scored for the Lakers.

Defiel got the start for the Lakers in the opener but was pulled after the Huskies fifth goal 11:33 into the contest. He returned after one shift but was ultimately pulled for the remainder of the night after the Huskies scored 1:19 into the second. He made 14 saves. Nick Kossoff made 31 saves in relief.

Redmond made 14 saves for the Huskies. Matt Wintjes also saw action, coming in for a short time after the Lakers third goal. He faced just one shot, which was Correale’s goal in the third period.
