As the Western Collegiate Hockey Association season continues, the Lake Superior State Lakers saw action over the weekend against a familiar foe.

In a low-scoring weekend set, the Lakers skated to a pair of ties with Northern Michigan in a home-and-home series.

On Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena, the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie with the Wildcats picking up the extra point by winning the shootout.

Dominik Shine had the shootout winner for Northern Michigan. Shane Sooth had the Wildcats lone goal in regulation time.

Lake State goaltender Gordon Defiel stopped 35 shots while Max Humitz scored for the Lakers.

On Friday night in Marquette, it was the Lakers who picked up the extra point in the standings after Gage Torrel scored with 9.1 seconds left in overtime.

The teams skated to a 1-1 tie through regulation time on goals by Humitz (Lake State) and Sami Salminen (Northern Michigan). Defiel made 25 saves for the Lakers.

The Lakers come out of the weekend series with a 6-9-3 conference record (9-12-3 overall). Northern Michigan is now 3-12-3 in WCHA action (5-17-4 overall).

The Lakers return to action on Jan. 20 in the first game of a weekend home series against Alabama-Huntsville. Puck drop is set for 7:37 p.m. Friday and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday.
