Truck fire at Roberta Bondar Pavilion (4 photos)

The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured, says a spokesperson for the fire services

The driver of a pickup fire escaped injury this evening when their vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Jeff Lajoie, platoon chief with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, said a call came in about 7:25 p.m. about a vehicle on fire in the parking lot of the Roberta Bondar Pavilion.

When they arrived on the scene, said Lajoie, firefighters found a pickup truck in flames.

“It was full involved when they arrived," said Lajoie.

The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured, said Lajoie.

Some heat damage was sustained by the asphalt immediately underneath the truck.

Police were called to the scene, which Lajoie said was standard procedure.

Const. Sonny Spina with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said officers on scene reported the incident as not suspicious in nature and the fire may have been the result of an electrical issue.

Protective boom was deployed near an adjacent drain cover to catch possible contaminants.

“It was a precaution in case the engine oil or gasoline let go, we don’t want it down in the river,” said Lajoie.
