WATCH: PM announces new support for businesses, food banks

New Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy provides support directly to businesses, not landlords

Update:
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new initiatives for Canadian businesses that include updating support for commercial rent and mortgage payments with the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS).

The funding will provide support directly to businesses, not landlords, the Prime Minister said.

CERS will provide to those who have seen a reduction in revenue up to 65 per cent of eligible business expenses, and up to 90 per cent for businesses temporarily shut down by mediatory second wave public health order.

The previously announced wage subsidy will be extended to December and Canada will expand the Canada Emergency Business Account for small businesses that includes an additional $10,000 forgivable loan.

An additional $100 million will be provided to support food banks, local food security organizations, Indigenous groups serving vulnerable groups, communities, and partners for northern communities.

Original information:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be joined for a media briefing today by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Health Patty Hajdu, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam, and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Howard Njoo.
