Mechanical failure suspected as 1985 Corvette burns on Airport Road; driver uninjured

A 1985 Chevrolet Corvette was destroyed by fire shortly after 4 p.m. Monday at Second Line and Airport Road.

The driver, Ben Bergen of Sault Ste. Marie, escaped from the vehicle uninjured.

There were no other vehicles involved.

Bergen, who was travelling on Airport Road south of Second Line, told SooToday, "I heard a pop and it stalled so I pulled over. I heard a hiss and it caught fire."

An ambulance driving by on an unrelated call contacted Sault Fire Services, which arrived on scene and put out the blaze.

Bergen said he believes a mechanical failure caused the vehicle to ignite.

Bergen said it was his first time driving the vehicle after purchasing it a week ago.

"I'm a little bummed out…(but) it's just a material possession," Bergen said, adding he felt fortunate to be alive.
