Electricity sparks interest of business students

Algoma U business students tour Brookfield Renewable Power's Prince Wind Farm

SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University business students visited Brookfield Renewable Power's Wind Operation facilities today as part of a local company tour series organized by the Algoma University Business Society (AUBS).

Students gathered at the Wind Operations building for a presentation by members of Brookfield's management team and the Algoma U Business Society provided an on-site lunch.

Students then traveled to the Prince Wind Farm site on the shores of Lake Superior to view the wind turbines in operation.

"You really can't grasp the actual size of these windmills until you're standing right beside one," explained Matt Paquette, a third year business student at Algoma University.

The turbines are 80 metres tall, not including the 77 metre diameter of the rotor.

As well, the 126 turbines that make up the Prince Wind Farm generate enough renewable green energy to power 60,000 homes.

The tour was the first of six in the Algoma University Business Society's local company tour series sponsored by the Certified General Accountants of Ontario.

"The goal of the series is to give business students at Algoma U a behind-the-scenes look at some of the large scale industries in Sault Ste. Marie," stated Scott Chartrand, president of the Algoma U Business Society and a student at the university. "Part of our organizations mandate is to expose students in the business program to the wide variety of industry and employment opportunities that exist in the Sault, and we feel that our local company tour series is a great way for students to make this connection."

The next tour for the Algoma U Business Society is tentatively scheduled for late October where students will get to see the inner workings of Flakeboard Limited at the MDF manufacturing facility on Base Line in Sault Ste. Marie.

About the Algoma University Business Society

The Algoma University Business Society (AUBS) is a student run organization that aims to provide Algoma U business students the opportunity to interact and network with fellow students and members of the local business community through strategic initiatives that will enrich the student experience.

Scheduled events throughout the academic year provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge that will compliment their studies at the university.

AUBS is currently operating solely on sponsorships from the local businesses and provincial organizations, which have provided both in kind and financial donations. Local businesses in the community who are interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact the organizations president Scott Chartrand at schartra@algomau.ca.
