Humber wins OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship

The Humber Hawks pulled off the three-peat on Saturday afternoon at the Essar Centre, defeating the Sheridan Bruins by a score of 66-59 to capture the 2011 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Saturday’s Gold Medal game.

Humber used their size to build a commanding lead early, and led by 12 at the half. Sheridan shot a mere 35.5% from the field in the first half, including going 1 for 12 from the 3-point line. Sheridan clawed back in the second half, tying the game at 54 with under 6 minutes remaining, then took their first lead with a 3-pointer from Jelani Matthews with 3:36 left. From there it was a see-saw battle until the 1-minute mark, when Humber pulled away to capture their third straight title.

Michael Acheampong led the Hawks in scoring, with 18. Other Hawks in double digits were Akeem Sween with 13 and Jeremy Alleyne with 12.

For Sheridan, Jelani Matthew led the way with 23 points, while Michael Selkridge and Trevor Williams scored 10 each.

Humber will now go on to play in the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships later this month, hosted by the Durham Lords.

In the bronze medal contest, the Fanshawe Falcons defeated the Algonquin Thunder 66-56.
