St. Basil earns city championship sweep

The St. Basil Saints earned a pair of Girls High School Basketball League city championships on Saturday night at St. Mary's.

In a thrilling junior final, the Saints needed triple overtime to defeat the Korah Colts 65-55. In senior, St. Basil edged Korah 52-44.

In the senior contest, Rachel McLean led the Saints with 12 points while Anna Stilin added 11. Sam Iacoe replied with a game-high 14 points for the Colts while Taylor Siqouin added eight and Kristine Caldbick seven.

Nikki Antler's 16 points led the Saints in the junior final while Courtney White added 14 and Rhaelyn Gillespie 13. Korah's Rachel Ivey poured in 25 points and Riley Hogan 18.

Up next is the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) playdowns next weekend.

Both St. Basil teams will remain in Sault Ste. Marie for the NOSSA AA playdowns hosted by St. Basil and St. Mary's. Both Korah squads will travel to Sudbury Lockerby for the NOSSA AAA championships.

Meanwhile, the Bawating Braves will represent the Sault at the NOSSA A championships in Elliot Lake.
