St. Mary's in solid position at NOSSA hockey

The St. Mary's Knights scored a win and a tie to sit on top of the standings after the first day of competition at the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) AA Hockey Championships at the Essar Centre.

The Knights opened the tournament on Tuesday with a 2-2 tie against Sudbury St. Charles before defeating local rival Sir James Dunn Eagles 5-2.

Tyler Wilson and Cody MacDonald scored for St. Mary's in the tie while Bo Boissoneau, James Delayer, Wilson, Steve Burt and Cain Nolan tallied in the win.

Jake Vachon and Adam Solomon scored for Sir James Dunn.

The Eagles opened with a 5-1 win over North Bay's Algonquin with Mike Freiberger, Jordan Vernelli, Matt Howard, Max Cicchello and Dane Hancherow providing the scoring.

In the other game, St. Charles defeated Algonquin 5-2.

St. Mary's sits tied for first in the standings with St. Charles at 1-0-1 followed by SJD (1-1-0) and Algonquin (0-2-0).

In action on Wednesday, Sir James Dunn meets St. Charles at 9 a.m. followed by the Knights and Algonquin at 11 a.m.

The top two teams will then meet in the championship game at 7 p.m.

All games are being held at the Essar Centre.
