Bawating, St. Basil capture NOSSA AAA hoops titles

The Bawating Braves and St. Basil Saints are celebrating regional basketball crowns.

In action held in the Sault this weekend, the Braves captured the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) senior boys AAA basketball championships with a 46-34 win over local rival St. Mary's Knights on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Saints captured the AAA junior title with a 49-34 win over Sudbury Lasalle.

In the senior contest, Corey Lecuyer led the Braves with 16 points while David Pipoli and Jordan Fresque added 11 each. Jordan Severini replied with nine points for the Knights while Michael Doan and Josh Martella chipped in seven each.

The Braves now advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships March 9-11 in Ottawa.

In the junior title match, Juan Colicchio led the Saints with 12 points, Kyle Genoe added 10 while Cole Bertolissi and Mario Bruni added eight each.

There are no OFSAA playdowns in junior basketball.
