SAULT STE.M ARIE, MI – It’s tough to fault a team when they outshoot their opponents by a 2-to-1 margin and give up the winning goal on a fluke.
That’s exactly what happened to the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday night as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Nebraska (Omaha) Mavericks at the Taffy Abel Arena. Eddie Del Grosso scored the game winner after his point shot hit the broken stick of Lakers defenceman Matt Cowie near the side of the goal and got past Pat Inglis.
“I had no problem with the effort tonight. (Friday) night I wasn’t happy with the effort,” said Lakers coach Jim Roque. “(Last night) was really the first time I haven’t been happy with our effort. When the puck goes in off a broken stick for the winning goal, that’s the hockey gods. We have to play more consistent night in and night out with our effort and good things will happen.”
Pasko Christenseon score the other Nebraska goal. Bryan Dunford scored the lone Lake State goal
The Lakers outshot the Mavericks 48-21 in the win and Pat Inglis stopped 19 in the loss.
On Friday night, the Bulls Tomas Klemnpa’s goal led the Mavericks to a 3-2 win
The Lakers also didn’t give up a lot of offensive chances, which is a trademark. It’s not so bad when you’re not scoring.
Next action is on Dec. 08, 200 when they travel to Yale.
