Northern Ontario Cadet Biathlon 2008

Sault Ste Marie’s Kasey VanScoy’s sore ankle was left behind in the snow as he finished first in the 8 Km. Senior Male category of the Northern Ontario Cadet Biathlon Competition held at the Algoma Rod and Gun on Saturday and Sunday.

An ankle injury from Sept. has kept Kasey VanScoy slowed down in practices. But that was not the case for this cadet from the 2310 Army Cadet Corps with a time of 37:19 min/sec. Hard work and determination was what he relied on.

The temperatures made for fast ski times. The snow on Saturday caused some frustration as rifle mechanisms started to freeze costing extra time that some competitors could not afford.

150 Sea, Army and Air Cadets from Bracebridge, North Bay, Timmins Area, Sudbury Area, Blind River and Sault Ste Marie participated on Saturday and Sunday with the winners advancing to the Central Region Cadet Biathlon on 09 and 10th of Feburary here in Sault Ste Marie. Skiing fast and shooting clean is the sport of biathlon. Just being a fast skier does not make a winner as you still need to be able to knock down all five targets each time you are on the range. For every target missed a skier is assessed a penalty loop.

Other Sault Ste Marie Cadets were Travis Parr from the 2310 Army Cadets with a fourth place in Senior Boys with 39:28 min/sec. Second and third place went two 2919 Army Cadets from 2963 Army in Naughten, Micheal Lockscmidt, and John Colwell. In the Junior Boys Tyler Davie of 46 Sea Cadets in Sault Ste Marie was third with a time of 37:47 min/sec. Alex Lake from the 2310 finished forth with 39:15 min./sec. In the Junior Female Natasha Floyd-Pauquette of the 2310 Army Cadets finished third after Miranda Wanamaker and Maureen Mirka of 2964 of Naughten.

On Sunday the Male and Female 3 X4.5 Km Relay saw the difference between first and second place due to penalty loops. The male team from 2310Army Cadet’s, consisting of Kasey VanScoy, Alex Lake and Travis Parr saw Kasey complete the course in 16:54 min./sec and only two misses. Unfortunately it was penalty loops that brought 2310 into second place. Coming in first was 2964 Army was Micheal Lockschmidt, Dylan Garbutt and John Colwell from Naughten. As you can see the Sault’s 2310 and Naughten’s 2964 were back and forth through out the weekend.

Sault Search and Rescue were on hand to assist if needed to transport any cadet who may have been injured while on the course with their snow vehicles and rescue sleighs.

The cadet who qualified are looking forward to the Regional competition on 9th and 10th of February with cadet coming from Sothern Ontario to compete. Finalists form the Regionals will advance onto the National Cadet Biathlon in Quebec.
